Termination
The Kuntaw tabuli has been terminated. Due to the folding of the IKF council and lack of response from the new IKF council, the Tambuli is no longer going to be spreading the news of Kuntaw. Those wishing to get Kuntaw updates from GGM may go to the www.kuntaw.net website. This website is going to be turned over to the AMKA for their news and updates.

FMA Brotherhood Midwest Gathering Seminar Group
The 1st annual FMA Brotherhood Midwest Gathering started off with a BANG. The Cadell Demo Team put on a clinic of rhythm, timing & precision with true style. Their firey performance got all participants excited & ready to begin the 2 day seminar immediately following the Demo Team's performance.
The first seminar was led by MyFMA.Net's own John Malmo. Mr. Malmo presented several presentations of systems within Kombatan. Mr. Malmo provided instruction in 2 stick systems & 2 empty hand systems/method of Kombatan.
Saturday afternoon the participants were presented with a seminar by Mr. Brian "Buzz" Smith on the methods of Maharlika Kuntaw. Mr. Smith began by presenting technique utilizing the method of the Filipino short staff. Mr. Smith was very estute in his descriptions & differences of the methods of fishermen, merchants & farmers. Mr. Smith went into some detail describing how each of these tradesmen became proficient in their methods & the differences of their hand positioning of each.
After a few thorough lessons on the short staff, Mr. Smith continued by educating us further in the empty hand translations of the same technique. Because the seminar participants were able to grasp the technique so well, Mr. Smith continued with joint manipulation and reversals to finish the 1st day of seminars.
We closed for the day & then retired to my home for a great Midwest BBQ buffett. Fantastic stories were shared with memories & laughter to keep us reminiscent till next year.
Sunday began the 2nd day of the 2 day seminar. Mr. Wes Bennett presented fantastic technique from the Lucaylucay Kali system. Mr. Bennett was flawless with demonstration & explanation of the technique. Also to close Mr. Bennett presented unique technique, which he seldom shares in a seminar environment.
The afternoon session began with Mr. Chuck Cadell presenting a Classical Cabales Serrada Escrima presentation. Mr. Cadell worked technique with single stick, empty hand translations, empty hand with lock flow, then finished with lock & block/espada y daga. Mr. Cadell gave a excellent workshop o the Serrada Escrima System.

Video Fraud
Please take a moment to view both videos and see if you can spot the fraud.
The first video is of Jeff Banaag a sikaran player - notice the orange/yellow sikaran emblem on his back and the Philippine flag on his arm.
Now go to this link and this is what was posted by Carlito Lanada Jr and notice the same emblems on the person that is supposed to be Lito Jr. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU073lhckwY At no time do you see a Kuntaw emblem and the techniques are the same as the previous video.

Who: 1) Conducted by Grand Master Bud Cothern for IKF Members from around the world: Saudi Arabia , Canada , Florida , New York , Maryland , Virginia , and California
Description: Grand Master Bud Cothern traveled from California to conduct seminars for IKF members
from around the globe. One seminar (NATO) highlighted proper judging techniques and
standards for black belts and above. The other seminars were geared towards improving and refining skills, techniques, strategies, and understanding of the art of Kuntaw for individual members. Sunday was simply a beautiful day for gathering and reuniting. Newer members had fun reviewing what they had learned and exchanging knowledge and personal insights as senior members recounted stories of personal experiences through the years in the art of Kuntaw.
“The Seminar of NATO on April 29 till May 1 was very successful. The support of the masters and instructors are very significant. I salute the presence and dedication of GM Bud Cothern of his limitless time to impart the NATO seminar. The precious time of Kyud Bill and Kyudai Alice who really give all their support to make this seminar a success. We also feel the presence of GGM kyud Lito because of the support of all kuntawistas and parents.” --Rollie Descargar, 7th Degree Master, IKF Director, Central , Canada .
“The recent NATO event was a smash hit. Kyud Bud had provided a wealth of information on form techniques in accordance with traditional values. My deepest thanks for your support and revitalizing my spirit. I also would like to express my sincerest thank you on behalf of IKF Jubail Chapter in Saudi Arabia . Bravo zulu!!” --Don Barlow, 3rd Degree Black Belt, Deputy IKF Director, Eastern Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia .
Grandmaster Bud Cothern started his martial arts training in 1962 in the art of Judo. But at the age of 16 under the guide of a black belt, who was working for the U.S. Navy. He started what was to be his lifelong journey in the ancient Filipino art known as Kuntaw.
In 1971 Bud joined the US Navy at the age of 17 as a means to continue his Kuntaw training. Twenty-two and a half years later he completed his journey in the U.S. Navy. It has been over forty years since beginning his Kuntaw training, and GM Cothern’s journey still continues in the art of Kuntaw.
Mr. Cothern attributes his success in this Filipino art directly to his teacher of many years, Great Grandmaster Lanada. “He is like a father to me. I have spent more years in Kuntaw than not. Kuntaw is part of who I am,” says Cothern. Bud also studied under Kuntaw legends Benjamin Ortiz (forms instructor) and fighting instructor Rey Basco. Grandmaster Bud Cothen received the Golden Lifetime Achievement award as he was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame in Anaheim , CA in 2010.
Great Grandmaster Carlito A. Lanada, Sr. is responsible for reviving this art in 1960, when he founded the IKF and KNP to facilitate and better organize its practitioners around the globe.
In fulfillment of his father’s wishes, Carlito has continued to promulgate and allow this art
to evolve, while successfully maintaining the same stringent standards that have historically enabled its practitioners to effectively defend themselves against their aggressors.

Lapu-Lapu was the king of Mactan, an island in the Visayas, Philippines, who is known as the first native of the archipelago to have resisted Spanish colonization. He is now regarded as the first Filipino hero.
On the morning of April 27, 1521, Lapu-Lapu and the men of Mactan, armed with spears, and kampilan, faced Spanish soldiers led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. In what would later be known as the Battle of Mactan, Magellan, and several of his men were killed.
According to Sulu oral tradition, Lapu-Lapu was a Muslim chieftain, and was also known as "Kaliph Pulaka".[3] The people of Bangsamoro, the Islamic homeland in the Philippine Islands, consider him to be a Muslim and a member of the Tausug ethnic group.[4] A variant of the name, as written by Carlos Calao, a 17th century Chinese-Spanish poet in his poem "Que Dios Le Perdone" (Spanish, "That God May Forgive Him") is "Cali Pulacu".Tuesday, April 26, 2011
IKF Forms and technique seminar
Grand Master Bud Cothern will be directing and instructing a qualifying seminar at the Kuntaw Palace April 29-30. This is to insure uniformity between the clubs in how the forms are taught and performed. Those wishing to advance beyond 5th degree will have to know these forms and why they are done this way. I for one, cannot learn a form from pictures or from a video. Being able to train with and ask questions of one of the founding US memebers will be a great asset. On sunday there will be a cookout and some picture taking. As I get the results I will post them here.

2011 Gathering of the Tribes Grand Rapids
The Spring gathering of the tribes has been cancelled for Grand rapids. Jay Carstensen has offered to hold it in Des Moines Iowa for those of you who still wish to get together this year. Chuck and Jeanne are having some difficulties and cannot host it this year. This event has been a mainstay of Filipino and Indonesian martial artists for ten years. It would be a shame to see it fold. Please give your support to this event and keep it going no matter if it is held in Iowa, Ohio, Michigan , or where ever.
